Description

CS-Descal is a descaler designed to remove scale and rust from domestic hot water and heating systems. It is composed of substances classified as food additives.

The product and its aqueous dilutions are classified as non-toxic and non-hazardous to the environment. The product is fully biodegradable.

CS-Descal effectively and quickly removes limescale deposits and iron oxides present in the system. It is compatible with stainless steel, brass and copper. For cleaning processes involving contact with other metals, please contact the technical department at carpemar@carpemar.com.

Advantages

  • Safer to handle; does not emit corrosive fumes; does not cause burns in the event of brief accidental skin contact.
  • After the cleaning process, simply rinse. No other product is required for neutralization, which would otherwise entail additional costs and labor hours.
  • In the event of ineffective rinsing, there are no corrosion issues, unlike other hydrochloric acid-based products, which leave behind high levels of chlorides.
  • Both the initial product and the final reaction products are biodegradable and are not subject to any waste restrictions.
  • The product is not subject to any transport (ADR) or storage restrictions.
  • Compatible with stainless steel corrugated shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
  • CS-Descal is a highly concentrated liquid (1 litre of the product dissolves approximately 0.5 kg of limescale).

Compatible materials

The product is based on a non-oxidising acid. According to the protocol described below, laboratory tests have not detected any effect on aluminium, aluminium-silicon alloys or commercial cast iron; therefore, CS-Descal can be used in all types of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration circuits. Compatible with all types of plastics and seals commonly used in thermal circuits.

In tests carried out on pumps with impellers and casings made of iron, bronze or engineering plastic (POM), no deterioration was detected after the pumps were rinsed with drinking water following cleaning. Similarly, no incompatibility with standard seals was detected. If in doubt, we recommend contacting our technical support team or carrying out compatibility tests on site.

Directions for use

  1. To remove limescale deposits from heat exchangers.

Isolate the components to be cleaned from the rest of the circuit. Using a pump, circulate the product diluted with water (proportions indicated below) through the heat exchanger or coil to be descaled. It is recommended to fit a filter (100 microns or less) on the suction side of the pump in order to remove any solids generated in the circuit during the cleaning process.

Start with a ratio of 2 % by weight (2 kg of product per 100 litres of water) and leave it to work. As the active ingredient is used to dissolve limescale deposits, scale and iron oxides, the product will turn orange and eventually yellow once it has been completely used up. The maximum recommended concentration is 10 % for cleaning systems with a large amount of limescale and rust.

Continuously adjust the concentration as the active ingredient is consumed; the colour will remain red or reddish-orange. This occurs when there is still active ingredient present, but no more limescale or iron to remove, meaning the cleaning process has finished.

The rate at which limescale dissolves increases with temperature; therefore, cleaning should be carried out at temperatures of 60 °C or higher whenever possible to speed up the process.

  2. Rapid cleaning of heating circuits.

Fill the circuit with a 4 – 10 per cent dilution of CS-Descal in water and circulate at a temperature of 60 – 80 °C for 1 – 2 hours at a flow rate sufficient to generate turbulent flow. It is recommended to fit a filter (100 microns or less) on the pump’s suction side in order to remove any solids generated in the circuit during the cleaning process.

After cleaning: once the cleaning process is complete, rinse thoroughly with water until the water runs clear and colorless.

Precautions

The product is stable under normal storage conditions for 12 months in its original, tightly sealed packaging. Protect from frost and direct sunlight.

Not considered toxic or flammable.

The product has an acidic pH, so avoid all contact with the skin and eyes. In the event of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.

The product and its aqueous dilutions do not produce acidic or irritant gases, ensuring a safer working environment.

Labelling in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH). Hazard and safety statements:

  • H319: Causes serious eye irritation.
  • P102: Keep out of reach of children.
  • P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
