Corrosion protection
Glycols can be more corrosive than water, so they must not be used without antioxidant additives to ensure the integrity of the circuit.
The results of the tests carried out in accordance with ASTM D 1384, which assess the effect of corrosion on different metals, are shown below.
| Material | Luzar® Waterless Coolant (88 °C) | Luzar® Waterless Coolant (135 °C) | ASTM D 3306 max. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | 2.6 | 3.4 | 10 |
| Solder | 1.6 | 11.8 | 30 |
| Brass | 2.8 | 5.2 | 10 |
| Steel | −0.5 | 0.3 | 10 |
| Cast iron | −0.1 | 1.2 | 10 |
| Aluminum | 0.0 | 0.1 | 30 |
The results shown represent the change in the average weight of the coupons, expressed in mg. A negative figure indicates an increase in weight due to the formation of a stable protective layer on the metal’s surface.
Tests carried out using undiluted Luzar® Waterless Coolant with the specified materials and test durations. Test temperatures: 88 °C (as per the standard) and 135 °C to assess high-temperature performance.

Directions for use
Before filling, the circuit must be rinsed with water to remove scale, assembly residues and flux residues, particularly where fluxes containing chlorides, fluorides or borax have been used.
Drain the circuit completely and immediately fill it with Luzar® Waterless Coolant. Periods during which the circuit is empty may affect the materials present, causing corrosion and premature ageing of the seals.
Small amounts of water in the circuit do not significantly affect the product’s performance. Water content of 1 – 3 per cent of the total circuit volume is acceptable.
The product is ready for direct use in the system; it must not be diluted with water or mixed with other fluids, as this would compromise its antifreeze and anti-corrosion properties. To enquire about specific compatibilities, please contact our technical department by email: carpemar@carpemar.com.
In the case of a system already in use, after draining the previous antifreeze, the system must be flushed with water to remove sediment and particles before filling the system with Luzar® Waterless Coolant. Existing corrosion can significantly shorten the product’s service life. If corrosion is detected, steps must be taken to rectify it before filling the system. Depending on the condition of the previous fluid, it is recommended that the circuit be flushed before filling, for example, with Luzar® Clean Cool or CS-LTV.
It is recommended that the circuit be properly bled after commissioning to remove any air pockets.
Avoid prolonged periods of inactivity of the system, as this may affect the stability of the product and significantly reduce its service life.
It is recommended to use Teflon or hemp tape to seal threaded joints. Check the compatibility of other products with pure glycols before using them.
Operating temperature
The product is stable within the temperature range of −40 °C to 220 °C. Temperatures above 220 °C may affect the product and reduce its service life.
In the case of open systems or those where oxygen enters (for example, via valves), the maximum temperature is lower.
Maintenance – Service life
The service life of Luzar® Waterless Coolant is at least five years in a closed circuit operating between the freezing point and 135 °C. Practical experience shows that the fluid does not degrade under the operating conditions described in this section, resulting in a longer service life.
To check the product’s performance, the most important parameters are pH and refractive index measurements. It is recommended that this monitoring procedure be carried out annually.
The refractive index should be between 64 and 65 °Brix. The appropriate pH range is between 8.0 and 9.5. Outside this range, the product should be analyzed to determine the cause and the procedure to be followed.
Dosage
Precautions
Luzar® Waterless Coolant is a non-toxic, non-flammable and non-corrosive product.
It is recommended that good industrial practices regarding the use of chemicals be followed in all cases. Wash your hands and forearms before eating, drinking or smoking after using the product.
Avoid contact with the eyes. Do not ingest or drink. Keep out of the reach of children.
When stored in its original, tightly sealed containers at temperatures between 5 and 35 °C away from direct sunlight, the product retains its properties for at least 24 months.
