Corrosion protection
Mixtures of monopropylene glycol and water are more corrosive than water. They must therefore not be used without additives, in order to ensure the integrity of the circuit against corrosion.
The results of tests evaluating the corrosion of various metals, carried out in accordance with the ASTM D 1384 standard, are shown below. The results shown are taken from the study carried out by INTA.
| Material | Blue Sun® Concentrate 33 % V/V | ASTM D 3306 max. |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 0.50 | 10 |
| Solder | 0.14 | 30 |
| Brass | −0.51 | 10 |
| Steel | −0.96 | 10 |
| Cast iron | −3.71 | 10 |
| Aluminium | 2.02 | 30 |
The results correspond to the average weight changes in mg per metal specimen. A negative result indicates a net gain, due to the formation of a stable protective layer on the metal surface.
The following table sets out the results of the tests carried out in accordance with ASTM D 4340:
| Material | Product | Result | Max. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Blue Sun® 25 % V/V | 0.5 mg/cm²·week | 1.0 mg/cm²·week |
Description of the ASTM D 1384 test: metal samples commonly used in cooling circuits are exposed for two weeks (336 hours) to a 33 per cent antifreeze solution with corrosive water under forced ventilation at a temperature of 88 °C. Each test is carried out three times and the mean value is taken as the result.
Description of the ASTM D 4340 test: in this test method, a heat flux is applied to a molten aluminum alloy, such as those commonly used in engine cylinder heads, whilst it is subjected to engine coolant at a pressure of 193 kPa (28 psi). The temperature of the aluminum test specimen is maintained at 135 °C (275 °F) and the test lasts for 1 week (168 h). The effectiveness of the coolant in preventing corrosion of the aluminum under heat transfer conditions is assessed on the basis of the change in weight of the test specimen.

Directions for use
Before filling, the circuit must be rinsed with water to remove scale, assembly residues and flux residues, particularly where fluxes containing chlorides, fluorides or borax have been used.
Following the pressure test, which can be used to determine the circuit’s volume, the circuit must be filled with the correct proportion of Blue Sun® Concentrate and the system purged to remove air pockets.
Avoid leaving the circuit empty between the pressure test and subsequent filling, as this affects the circuit components, particularly carbon steel and cast iron.
In the case of a circuit currently in use, after draining the previous antifreeze, it must be flushed with water to remove sediment and particles before filling the system with Blue Sun® Concentrate. Existing corrosion can significantly shorten the product’s service life. If corrosion is detected, corrective measures must be taken before filling the system. Depending on the condition of the previous fluid, it is recommended to clean the circuit before filling it, for example, with Luzar® Clean Cool or CS-LTV.
It is recommended to use Teflon or hemp tape to seal threaded joints. Check the compatibility of other products with propylene glycol before using them.
Blue Sun® Concentrate must be diluted to at least 20 per cent by volume to ensure full anti-corrosion protection. In special cases, dilutions of up to 60 per cent by volume may be used. The recommended concentration is between 25 per cent and 50 per cent.
It is recommended to use distilled or deionized water for dilution when tap water is very hard, unfit for consumption or has a chlorine content exceeding 100 ppm. Please note that you must take into account the applicable legal restrictions regarding water quality for the dilution of antifreeze, in accordance with the regulations in force at your company.
Mixing with other types of antifreeze should be avoided due to the potential for incompatibilities that could shorten the product’s service life. To enquire about specific compatibilities, please contact our technical department by email: carpemar@carpemar.com.
You must ensure that the system is not left inactive for long periods of time and that the antifreeze does not remain stationary in the circuit or be subjected to thermal stress, as this may affect the product’s stability and, consequently, significantly shorten its service life.
To prepare the mixture in the correct proportions, depending on the desired temperature, pour water and the antifreeze into a sufficiently large container and stir the mixture until a homogeneous solution is obtained. The mixture can also be prepared within the system by keeping the pump running with all circuits open until a refractometer confirms that the glycol concentration matches the calculated value. Leave the pump running for at least long enough for the total volume of the system to circulate through it 3.5 times.

The freezing point, as defined by ASTM D 1177, indicates the temperature at which the first ice crystal forms. The DIN 51583 standard specifies the rupture temperature, at which the product ceases to flow and increases in volume, thereby putting into risk the integrity of the system. Between these two points lies a mixture of ice crystals and unfrozen liquid which flows without increasing in volume and therefore causes no damage to the system. The arithmetic mean of the two temperatures mentioned above is defined as the protection temperature.
Minor, pre-existing corrosion damage may become more apparent after filling with Blue Sun® due to its lower surface tension compared with water.
Operating temperature
The product is stable within a temperature range between the freezing point and 180 °C. Temperatures above 200 °C cause a gradual alteration of the antifreeze’s chemical properties, which puts operational reliability into risk.
In the case of open systems or those where oxygen enters (for example, via valves), the maximum temperature is lower.
Maintenance – Service life
The service life of Blue Sun® Concentrate dilutions is at least five years in a closed circuit operating between the freezing point and 100 °C. Practical experience shows that the fluid does not degrade under the operating conditions described in this section, resulting in a longer service life.
To check the product’s performance, measurements of the pH value and glycol concentration are the most important parameters. It is recommended that this monitoring procedure be carried out every 12 months.
The glycol content must not deviate from the initial value. The appropriate pH range is between 7.5 and 9.0. Outside this range, the product must be analyzed to determine the cause and the procedure to be followed.
Dosage
Precautions
Blue Sun® Concentrate and its dilutions are non-flammable, non-corrosive and non-toxic products. In any case, it is recommended to follow good industrial practice when handling chemicals.
Avoid contact with the eyes. In the event of contact, rinse the eye thoroughly with water for 10 minutes. Do not swallow and keep out of the reach of children.
When stored in its original, tightly sealed containers at temperatures between 5 and 35 °C and away from direct sunlight, the product retains its properties for at least 24 months.
