Description

Luzar® Organic Concentrate optimizes heat transfer, improving system performance.

100 % organic formula (OAT) ensuring optimal protection for all types of metals, and compatible with the plastics and elastomers commonly found in cooling systems. Aluminum and its alloys are protected against corrosion.

The additives are not consumed during use, so there is no need to replenish them with additional packs or periodically check for residual additives.

Luzar® Organic Concentrate is based on monoethylene glycol and is suitable for any application where there is no risk of contact with food.

Corrosion protection

Mixtures of monoethylene glycol and water are more corrosive than pure water; therefore, additives must be used to ensure the integrity of the circuit.

The following table shows the corrosion-inhibiting effectiveness of Luzar® Organic Concentrate – water mixtures according to the ASTM D 1384 standard.

Metal Luzar® Organic Concentrate 33 % V/V ASTM D 3306 limit
Copper 1.9 10
Solder 0.3 30
Brass 0.1 10
Mild steel 0.2 30
Cast iron −0.7 10
Aluminum 6.3 30

The preceding results represent the average weight change of the samples in mg. A negative value indicates a weight increase due to the formation of a stable protective layer on the metal surface. The last column shows the maximum values permitted under the ASTM D 3306 standard.

Test description ASTM D 1384: in this test method, specimens of metals typical of engine cooling systems are completely immersed in aerated coolant solutions containing corrosive water for 336 hours at 88 °C (190 °F). The corrosion-inhibiting properties of the test solution are evaluated based on the weight changes of the specimens. Each test is performed in triplicate, and the average weight change for each metal is determined.

Compatible materials

Luzar® Organic Concentrate and its aqueous dilutions are compatible with materials commonly used in thermal circuits. The following table lists the plastics, sealants, and elastomers compatible with the product’s aqueous dilutions at standard concentrations. The data have been compiled from specialized literature and in-house testing.

Name Abbreviation
Butyl rubber IIR
Chloroprene CR
Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber EPDM
Fluorocarbon elastomers FPM
Natural rubber (up to 80 °C) NR
Nitrile rubber NBR
Polyoxymethylene POM
Polyamide (up to 115 °C) PA
Polybutene PB
Polyethylene high/low density PE-LD / PE-HD
Polyethylene cross linked VPE
Polypropylene PP
Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) PTFE
Polyvinyl chloride, rigid PVC h
Silicone Si
Styrene-butadiene rubber (up to 100 °C) SBR
Unsaturated polyester resins UP

Phenolic resins, plasticized PVC, and polyurethane elastomers are not compatible with Luzar® Organic Concentrate.

Monoethylene glycol and its dilutions are incompatible with zinc, as they dissolve it. Avoid containers that contain zinc.

If the system contains galvanized piping, a non-scaling, whitish solid will appear at the start of operations; this can be removed by filtration. Once removed, the underlying carbon steel will be protected by Luzar® Organic Concentrate, so no additional precautions will be necessary.

Directions for use

Before filling, the circuit must be flushed with water to remove scale and assembly debris, as well as flux residues—especially when fluxes containing chloride, fluoride, or borax have been used.

After the pressure test—during which the exact volume of the circuit can also be determined using a meter—the system must be filled with a mixture of antifreeze and water (or pure antifreeze) and the fluids mixed within the circuit via recirculation. It is not advisable to leave the circuit empty after the pressure test, particularly if carbon steel is present, as it is highly susceptible to damage.

It is recommended to properly bleed the circuit after start-up to eliminate any potential air pockets.

Luzar® Organic Concentrate is a concentrated product that must be diluted before use. The minimum concentration to guarantee protection against corrosion is 20 %. The maximum recommended concentration is 50 %. This product offers its best performance between 30 % and 50 %. In special applications, dilutions of up to 60 % can be achieved.

It is recommended to dilute the antifreeze with osmosis-treated or deionized water if the mains water is very hard, non-potable, or contains more than 100 ppm of chlorides. We advise you to take into account current regulations regarding the quality of the water used for dilution, regardless of the jurisdiction in which your company operates.

When servicing an existing cooling system, the old antifreeze must be drained, and the system flushed with water to remove sediment and particles before filling it with Luzar® Organic Concentrate. Pre-existing corrosion can significantly shorten the product’s service life. If corrosion is detected, corrective measures must be taken before filling the system. Depending on the condition of the old fluid, it is recommended to clean the system before refilling—for example, using Luzar® Clean Cool or Luzar® LD.

It is recommended to use Teflon tape or hemp to seal threaded joints. Check the compatibility of other products with monoethylene glycol before use.

Mixing with other types of antifreeze should be avoided due to potential incompatibility that could reduce the product’s service life. For specific compatibility inquiries, please contact our technical department by emailing carpemar@carpemar.com.

To prepare the correct dilution, simply determine the desired freezing point to calculate the appropriate proportions of antifreeze and water. Choose a container of sufficient capacity and stir until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. The mixture can be prepared within the system by pumping the product and water together until a homogeneous blend is achieved, keeping all valves open to ensure the coolant reaches every part of the circuit. The product must be circulated through the pump at a volume equivalent to at least 3.5 times the total system capacity. Use a refractometer to verify that the expected concentration has been reached.

The freezing temperature according to the ASTM D 1177 standard indicates the temperature at which the first ice crystal forms.

The DIN 51583 standard specifies the breakdown temperature, at which point the product ceases to flow and increases in volume, thereby compromising the integrity of the installation.

Between these two points lies a mixture of ice crystals and unfrozen liquid that flows without increasing in volume and, therefore, causes no damage to the system. The arithmetic mean of the two aforementioned temperatures is defined as the protection temperature.

Minor corrosion damage may become more visible after filling with Luzar® Organic, due to its lower surface tension compared to water.

Operating temperature

Sustained temperatures above 150 °C cause premature aging of monoethylene glycol, reducing the product’s service life.

Temperatures above 170 °C cause a gradual deterioration of the antifreeze fluid’s chemical properties, which can compromise the system’s operational reliability.

In the case of non-closed systems or the introduction of oxygen (for example, through valves), the maximum operating temperature is lower.

Maintenance – Service life

The service life of Luzar® Organic Concentrate is at least five years in a closed-loop system operating between the freezing point and 100 °C. Field experience demonstrates that the fluid does not degrade under the intended operating conditions, resulting in an extended service life.

To verify product performance, the key parameters are pH measurement and glycol concentration. It is recommended to perform this check every 12 months.

The glycol content must not differ from the initial value. The correct pH range is between 7.5 and 9.0. Outside this range, the product must be analyzed to determine the cause and the procedure to follow.

Dosage

Precautions

Luzar® Organic Concentrate is a non-flammable and non-corrosive product. Based on monoethylene glycol, the product is toxic if swallowed; do not ingest or drink. Keep out of the reach of children.

It is recommended to follow good industrial practices regarding the use of chemical products in all cases. Wash hands and forearms before eating, drinking, or smoking after using the product.

When stored in its original, tightly sealed containers at temperatures between 5 and 35 °C and away from direct sunlight, the product retains its properties for at least 24 months.
