Luzar Organic −10 °C
Description
Luzar® Organic −10 °C optimises heat transfer, improving the system’s performance.
A 100 % organic formula (OAT) that guarantees the best protection for all types of metals and is compatible with the plastics and elastomers commonly found in circuits. It protects aluminium and its alloys against corrosion.
The additives are not consumed during use, so there is no need to top up with additional containers or to periodically check residual additive levels.
Luzar® Organic −10 °C is based on monoethylene glycol and is suitable for any application where there is no risk of contact with food.

Protection temperature: the freezing point, as defined by the ASTM D 1177 standard, is the temperature at which the first ice crystals begin to form. The DIN 51583 standard specifies the temperature at which the product ceases to flow and there is a risk to the integrity of the circuit. Between these two temperatures, there is a mixture of ice crystals and unfrozen fluid which flows without any increase in volume, meaning there is no risk of rupture.

Corrosion protection
Mixtures of ethylene glycol and water are more corrosive than water and therefore cannot be used without antioxidant additives to ensure the integrity of the circuit.
The results of the tests carried out in accordance with ASTM D 1384, which assess the effect of corrosion on different metals, are shown below.
| Material | Luzar® Organic −10 °C | ASTM D 3306 max. |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 0.07 | 10 |
| Solder | 0.41 | 30 |
| Brass | −0.68 | 10 |
| Mild steel | −1.34 | 10 |
| Cast iron | −3.65 | 10 |
| Aluminium | 8.90 | 30 |
The results shown represent the change in the average weight of the coupons, expressed in mg. A negative figure indicates an increase in weight due to the formation of a stable protective layer on the metal’s surface.
Test description ASTM D 1384: in this test method, samples of metals typical of those found in engine cooling systems are fully immersed in aerated solutions of engine coolant with corrosive water for 336 hours at 88 °C (190 °F). The corrosion-inhibiting properties of the test solution are evaluated based on the weight variations experienced by the samples. Each test is carried out in triplicate, and the average weight variation is determined for each metal.

| Polyethylene cross linked | VPE |
| Polypropylene | PP |
| Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) | PTFE |
| Polyvinyl chloride, rigid | PVC h |

Phenolic resins, plasticized PVC and polyurethanes are not compatible with aqueous mixtures of Luzar® Organic −10 °C.
As zinc is not compatible with mixtures of glycol and water, exposure to such mixtures must be avoided as far as possible, as ethylene glycol could corrode and dissolve it.
If the system contains galvanised pipes, a whitish solid substance will appear at the start of operation. Once this has been removed, the resulting carbon steel is protected by Luzar® Organic −10 °C and no further precautions are necessary.

Directions for use
Before filling, the circuit must be rinsed with water to remove scale and assembly residues, as well as flux residues, particularly where fluxes containing chloride, fluoride or borax have been used.
Following the pressure test – during which the exact volume of the circuit can also be determined using a meter – the circuit must be filled with a mixture of antifreeze and water or with pure antifreeze, and this must be circulated through the circuit. It is not advisable to leave the circuit empty after the pressure test, particularly if it contains carbon steel, as this is highly susceptible to damage.
It is recommended to bleed the circuit thoroughly after commissioning to remove any air pockets.
In the case of a circuit already in use, after draining the previous antifreeze, it must be flushed with water to remove sediment and particles before filling the system with Luzar® Organic −10 °C. Existing corrosion can significantly shorten the product’s service life. If corrosion is detected, corrective measures must be taken before filling the system. Depending on the condition of the previous fluid, it is recommended to clean the circuit before filling it, for example, with Luzar® Clean Cool or Luzar® LD.
It is recommended to use Teflon tape or hemp to seal threaded joints. Check the compatibility of other products with monoethylene glycol before using them.
The product is supplied ready for use; do not dilute or mix with other products.
Mixing with other types of antifreeze should be avoided due to possible incompatibilities that would reduce the product’s service life. For specific compatibility enquiries, please contact our technical department by email: carpemar@carpemar.com.
The lower surface tension of Luzar® Organic −10 °C compared to water may make minor damage caused by previous corrosion more apparent.
Operating temperature
Temperatures above 150 °C cause a gradual deterioration in the chemical properties of the antifreeze, which puts at risk the reliability of the system’s operation.
Temperatures above 170 °C cause a slow degradation of the antifreeze’s chemical properties, which puts at risk the reliability of the system’s operation.
In the case of open systems or those where oxygen enters (for example, via valves), the maximum temperature is lower.
Maintenance – Service life
The service life of Luzar® Organic −10 °C in its diluted forms is at least seven years in a closed circuit operating between the freezing point and 100 °C. Practical experience shows that the fluid does not degrade under the operating conditions described in this section, resulting in a longer service life.
To check the product’s performance, the most important parameters are the pH and glycol concentration measurements. It is recommended that these values be checked once a year.
The glycol content should not differ from the initial value. The appropriate pH range is between 7.5 and 9. Outside this range, the product should be analysed to determine the cause and the procedure to be followed.
Dosage
Precautions
Luzar® Organic −10 °C is a non-flammable and non-corrosive product. Made from monoethylene glycol, the product is toxic if swallowed: do not swallow or drink. Keep out of the reach of children.
It is recommended that good industrial practices regarding the use of chemicals be followed in all cases. Wash your hands and forearms before eating, drinking or smoking after using the product.
When stored in its original, tightly sealed packaging at temperatures between 5 and 35 °C, away from direct sunlight, the product retains its properties for at least 24 months.
