Description

Solar Coolant Concentrate is a long-life antifreeze based on propylene glycol, making it a non-toxic product.

The presence of hybrid antioxidants keeps the cooling system in perfect working order for longer periods than conventional products.

All additives used in the product’s formulation are food-grade and are considered GRAS by the FDA.

Approvals / Specifications

It has the lowest hazard classification for surface water (WGK1) and is included on the positive list of LAWA, the German water protection authority.

Corrosion protection

Mixtures of propylene glycol and water are more corrosive than pure water, so additives must be used to ensure the integrity of the system.

The following table shows the effectiveness of a 33 % dilution of Solar Coolant Concentrate with corrosive water in inhibiting corrosion according to ASTM D 1384.

Material Solar Coolant Concentrate 33 % V/V ASTM D 3306 max.
Copper 5.9 10
Solder 0.5 30
Brass 1.3 10
Mild steel −1.0 30
Grey cast iron 0.7 10
Aluminium 0.1 30

The results above represent the average change in coupon weight. A negative number indicates an increase in weight due to the formation of a stable protective layer on the metal surface. The last column shows the maximum values permitted by the ASTM D 3306 standard.

Description of the ASTM D 1384 test: in this test method, metal specimens representative of those found in engine cooling systems are fully immersed in aerated solutions of engine coolant mixed with corrosive water for 336 hours at 88 °C. The corrosion-inhibiting properties of the test solution are evaluated based on the changes in weight of the specimens. Each test is performed in triplicate, and the average weight change is determined for each metal.

Compatible materials

Solar Coolant Concentrate and its dilutions with water are compatible with standard materials used in thermal circuits. The following table lists the plastics, sealants, and elastomers that are compatible with the product. The data was compiled from specific literature and proprietary testing.

Rubber – isobutene-isoprene rubber IIR
Chloropropene rubber CR
Ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer rubber EPDM
Fluorocarbon elastomers FPM

Polybutylene PB
High/low-density polyethylene LD-PE / HDPE
Cross-linked polyethylene EVP
Polypropylene PP

Styrene-butadiene rubber (up to 100 °C) SBR
Unsaturated polyester (thermoset) UP

Phenolic resins, plasticized PVC, and polyurethane elastomers are not compatible with water mixtures of Solar Coolant Concentrate.

Monopropylene glycol and its aqueous dilutions are not compatible with zinc, as they dissolve it. Therefore, contact with zinc must be avoided; otherwise, the zinc will be affected and dissolved.

If there is galvanized material in the system, a whitish sediment will initially appear as the zinc dissolves and precipitates as oxide. Once this solid is removed, the exposed carbon steel will be protected by Solar Coolant Concentrate at the indicated dosage range without requiring any further action on the system.

Directions for use

Before filling, the circuit must be rinsed with water to remove scale, assembly debris, and flux residue, especially when fluxes containing chlorides, fluorides, or borax have been used.

After the pressure test—which can be used to determine the circuit’s volume—the circuit must be filled with the correct proportion of Solar Coolant Concentrate, and the system must be purged to remove air pockets.

Avoid leaving the circuit empty between the pressure test and subsequent filling, as this can damage circuit components, particularly carbon steel and cast iron.

For a circuit currently in use, after draining the previous antifreeze, it must be flushed with water to remove sediment and particles before filling the system with Solar Coolant Concentrate. Existing corrosion can significantly shorten the product’s service life. If corrosion is detected, corrective measures must be taken before filling the system. Depending on the condition of the previous fluid, it is recommended to clean the circuit before filling it, for example, with Luzar® Clean Cool or CS-LTV.

It is recommended to use Teflon tape or hemp to seal threaded joints. Check the compatibility of other products with propylene glycol before using them.

Solar Coolant Concentrate must be diluted to at least 25 % by volume to ensure full corrosion protection. In special cases, dilutions of up to 60 % by volume may be used. The recommended concentration is between 30 % and 50 %.

Mixing with other antifreeze products should be avoided due to potential incompatibilities that may reduce the product’s service life. For inquiries regarding specific compatibilities, please contact the technical department: carpemar@carpemar.com.

Avoid leaving the system inactive for long periods of time and ensure that the antifreeze circulates through the system and is not subjected to thermal stress, as this can affect the product’s stability and, consequently, significantly shorten its service life.

To prepare the mixture in the correct proportions, depending on the desired temperature, pour water and antifreeze into a sufficiently large container and stir the mixture until a homogeneous solution is obtained.

The mixture can also be prepared directly in the system by keeping the pump running with all circuits open until a refractometer confirms that the glycol concentration matches the calculated value. Keep the pump running long enough for the total volume of the system to circulate through it 3.5 times.

Solar Coolant Conc. (% V/V) Freezing point (°C) Protection temp. (°C) Burst point (°C)
20 −6 −8 −9
25 −8 −10 −12
30 −11 −14 −16
35 −15 −18 −21
40 −19 −23 −28
45 −23 −30 −37
50 −28 −38 −48

The freezing point, as defined by the ASTM D 1177 standard, indicates the temperature at which the first ice crystal forms. The DIN 51583 standard specifies the rupture temperature, at which the product ceases to flow and increases in volume, thereby putting in risk the integrity of the system. Between these two points lies a mixture of ice crystals and unfrozen liquid which flows without increasing in volume and therefore causes no damage to the system. The arithmetic mean of the two temperatures mentioned above is defined as the protection temperature.

Minor, pre-existing corrosion damage may become more apparent after filling with Solar Coolant Concentrate due to its lower surface tension compared with water.

Operating temperature

Temperatures above 170 °C cause the chemical properties of the antifreeze to deteriorate slowly, which may compromise the reliability of the system’s operation.

In the case of open systems or where oxygen is introduced (for example, via valves), the maximum operating temperature is lower.

Maintenance – Service life

The service life of Solar Coolant Concentrate dilutions is at least five years in a closed circuit operating between the freezing point and 100 °C. Practical experience shows that the fluid does not degrade under the operating conditions described in this section, resulting in a longer service life.

To check the product’s performance, measurements of the pH value and glycol concentration are the most important parameters. It is recommended that this monitoring procedure be carried out every 12 months.

The glycol content must not deviate from the initial value. The appropriate pH range is between 7.5 and 9.0. Outside this range, the product must be analysed to determine the cause and the procedure to be followed.

Dosage

Precautions

Solar Coolant Concentrate and its dilutions are non-flammable, non-corrosive and non-toxic products. In any case, it is recommended that good industrial practices be followed when handling chemicals.

Avoid contact with the eyes. Do not swallow and keep out of the reach of children.

When stored in its original, tightly sealed packaging at temperatures between 5 and 35 °C, away from direct sunlight, the product retains its properties for at least 24 months.
