Propylene Glycol Coolant NSF Concentrate
Description
Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate is a clear, orange liquid. Its propylene glycol-based composition makes it safe to handle.
It is a coolant and antifreeze that keeps the circuit in perfect working order for longer periods than conventional inorganic products, and, above all, much better than a mixture of USP propylene glycol and water without anti-corrosion additives. Optimized heat transmission, increased installation performance, reduced consumption.
It contains no nitrites or amines, substances which can form nitrosamines, potential carcinogens. Nor does it contain silicates, borates, nitrates, triazoles, 2-EH or heavy metals.
Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate is miscible with water in all proportions. Performance is not affected by the presence of water.

Approvals / Specifications
Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate is approved by NSF in accordance with standard HT1 for incidental contact with food (registration no. 152118).
It has the lowest hazard classification for surface water (WGK1) and is included on the positive list of LAWA, the German water protection authority.
Corrosion protection
Mixtures of monopropylene glycol and water are more corrosive than water. They must therefore not be used without additives to ensure the integrity of the system against corrosion.
The results of corrosion tests on various metals, carried out in accordance with ASTM D 1384, are shown below.
| Material | Propylene Glycol Coolant 33 % V/V | ASTM D 3306 max. |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 5.9 | 10 |
| Solder | 0.5 | 30 |
| Brass | 1.3 | 10 |
| Steel | −1.0 | 10 |
| Cast iron | 0.7 | 10 |
| Aluminum | 0.1 | 30 |
The results correspond to the average weight changes in mg per metal specimen. A negative result indicates a net gain, due to the formation of a stable protective layer on the metal surface.
Description of the ASTM D 1384 test: metal samples commonly used in cooling circuits are exposed for two weeks (336 hours) to a 33 per cent antifreeze solution with corrosive water under forced ventilation at a temperature of 88 °C. Each test is carried out three times and the mean value is taken as the result.
Compatible materials
Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate is compatible with materials commonly used in thermal circuits. The table below lists plastics, sealants and elastomers that are compatible with mixtures of this product and water in their standard proportions. Phenolic resins, plasticized PVC and polyurethanes are not compatible with Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate or its aqueous dilutions.
Monopropylene glycol and its aqueous dilutions are not compatible with zinc, as they dissolve it. Contact with zinc must therefore be avoided, as otherwise it will be affected and dissolved.
If there is galvanized material in the system, a whitish sediment will initially appear as the zinc dissolves and precipitates as oxide. Once this solid has been removed, the exposed carbon steel will be protected by Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate within the specified dosage range without requiring any further action on the system.

Directions for use
Before filling, the circuit must be flushed with water to remove scales, assembly residues and flux residues, particularly where fluxes containing chlorides, fluorides or borax have been used.
Following the pressure test, which can be used to determine the circuit’s volume, the circuit must be filled with the correct proportion of Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate and the system purged to remove air pockets.
Avoid leaving the circuit empty between the pressure test and subsequent filling, as this affects the circuit components, particularly carbon steel and cast iron.
In the case of a circuit currently in use, after draining the previous antifreeze, it must be flushed with water to remove sediment and particles before filling the system with Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate. Existing corrosion can significantly shorten the product’s service life. If corrosion is detected, corrective measures must be taken before filling the system. Depending on the condition of the previous fluid, it is recommended to clean the circuit before filling it, for example, with Luzar® Clean Cool.
It is recommended to use Teflon or hemp tape to seal threaded joints. Check the compatibility of other products with propylene glycol before using them.
Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate must be diluted to at least 25 per cent by volume to ensure full anti-corrosion protection. In special cases, dilutions of up to 60 per cent by volume may be used. The recommended concentration is between 30 per cent and 50 per cent.
Mixing with other antifreeze products should be avoided due to potential incompatibility that may reduce the product’s service life. For enquiries regarding specific compatibilities, please contact the technical department: carpemar@carpemar.com.
The system should not be left inactive for long periods of time, and the antifreeze should not be left to stand in the circuit or be subjected to thermal stress, as this may affect the product’s stability and, consequently, significantly shorten its service life.
To prepare the mixture in the correct proportions, depending on the desired temperature, pour water and the antifreeze into a sufficiently large container and stir the mixture until a homogeneous solution is obtained. The mixture can also be prepared within the system by keeping the pump running with all circuits open until a refractometer confirms that the glycol concentration matches the calculated value. Leave the pump running for at least long enough for the total volume of the system to circulate through it 3.5 times.

The freezing point, as defined by ASTM D 1177, indicates the temperature at which the first ice crystal forms. The DIN 51583 standard specifies the rupture temperature, at which the product ceases to flow and increases in volume, thereby jeopardizing the integrity of the system. Between these two points lies a mixture of ice crystals and unfrozen liquid which flows without increasing in volume and therefore causes no damage to the system. The arithmetic mean of the two temperatures mentioned above is defined as the protection temperature.
Minor, pre-existing corrosion damage may become more apparent after filling with Propylene Glycol Coolant due to its lower surface tension compared with water.
Operating temperature
Sustained temperatures above 170 °C cause premature ageing of the propylene glycol.
Temperatures above 200 °C cause the gradual degradation of the antifreeze’s chemical properties, which jeopardizes the reliable operation of the system.
The optimum operating temperature range is between the mixture’s freezing point and 130 °C.
In the case of open systems or those where oxygen enters (for example, via valves), the maximum temperature is lower.
Maintenance – Service life
The service life of Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate dilutions is at least five years in a closed circuit operating between the freezing point and 100 °C. Practical experience shows that the fluid does not degrade under the operating conditions described in this section, resulting in a longer service life.
To check the product’s performance, measurements of the pH value and glycol concentration are the most important parameters. It is recommended that this monitoring procedure be carried out every 12 months.
The glycol content must not deviate from the initial value. The appropriate pH range is between 7.5 and 9.0. Outside this range, the product must be analyzed to determine the cause and the procedure to be followed.
Dosage
Precautions
Propylene Glycol Coolant Concentrate and its dilutions are non-flammable, non-corrosive and non-toxic products. In all cases, it is recommended that good industrial practices be followed when handling chemicals.
Avoid contact with the eyes. In the event of contact, rinse the eye thoroughly with water for 10 minutes. Do not swallow and keep out of the reach of children.
When stored in its original, tightly sealed packaging at temperatures between 5 and 35 °C, away from direct sunlight, the product retains its properties for at least 24 months.
